Rocky Anderson: 3rd party presidential candidate comes to USU
October 28th, 2012 Posted in OpinionLOGAN—Justice Party presidential candidate Rocky Anderson came to Utah State University Friday to criticize the dominant two-party political system and a “deceptive” press for marginalizing citizens and democracy.
Anderson spoke at USU’s Morris Media & Society Lecture Series, sponsored by the Department of Journalism & Communication, on “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: The Media in an Age of Mass Deception.”
“It is surely an apt topic in the midst of any presidential campaign, and maybe especially this one,” said journalism department head Ted Pease in introducing Anderson to an audience of about 200 students, faculty, staff and local residents at the USU Eccles Conference Center.
The Logan native and third-party presidential candidate made his case for more choice of leadership, and pointed the finger squarely at the mass media for misinforming the American public.
In 2011, Anderson left the Democratic Party in disgust to form the Justice Party. “The Constitution has been eviscerated while Democrats have stood by with nary a whimper,” he said. “It is a gutless, unprincipled party, bought and paid for by the same interests that buy and pay for the Republican Party.”

Best known in Utah as mayor of Salt Lake City from 2000 to 2008, Anderson also founded and serves as executive director of High Road for Human Rights, a national grassroots activist organization aimed at engaging citizens in defense of human rights.
As mayor of Salt Lake, Anderson attracted national attention as a champion of various causes—including climate protection, immigration policy, criminal justice reform, LGBT rights, and an end to the “war on drugs.” He was an early and outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq.
