HYRUM — It is not uncommon for towns and cities to put on their own celebration for Independence Day on July Fourth, however, Hyrum takes the meaning of an Independence Day celebration to a whole new level.

Hyrum’s Fourth of July celebration is known as the Star Spangled Celebration. The annual celebration has become a town tradition, one that many residents look forward to all year round.

“The Fourth of July is a pretty big deal in Hyrum. We have patriotic programs, parades, fireworks, dances, pretty much everything. It’s a ton of fun and almost everybody comes,” said 20-year-old Michelle Allgood.

This year, Hyrum’s Star Spangled Celebration will start on June 22 and have activities running through July 4.

Some of the main events this year include a rodeo, a water fight with the city’s firemen, a parade, a freedom run race, a teen dance and, of course, fireworks.

With so much going on, the city has already started to plan for the celebration. To sign up to participate in the parade or to run a booth in the town square during the celebration, visit hyrumcity.org/archives/1770. The site also contains general information about the celebration and an agenda of this year’s events.

A new feature at this year’s celebration may be that the fireworks will be set off in time with music. On April 5, the Hyrum City Council discussed with Friend Weller the possibility of coordinating the fireworks show with music.

“It’s a little tricky when it comes to coordinating music and fireworks,” said Weller. “It can get a bit expensive, but I’d definitely be willing to give it a try and see what I can do.”
