Smithfield: Utah city, town leaders compare notes at convention
October 2nd, 2015 Posted in OpinionSMITHFIELD — Smithfield officials attended the Utah League of Cities and Towns convention in Salt Lake City recently to discuss new state legislation affecting their town with other public officials from around the state.
“This conference is important because it updates us on what’s going on around the state,” city councilmember Kris Monson said. “As city officials, we need to know what the legislation is so we can improve our towns.”
Monson said a key aspect of the meeting is to inform local public officials about new regulations on water, sewage and other public works services that are offered in towns like Smithfield.
“We take several classes and have several meetings on these parts of the government so that we are better able to serve our town,” said Monson.
In a message to the city officials at the convention, John Curtis, the mayor of Provo and the president of the UCLT, said the purpose of the convention is to “come together to share ideas and discover new ways to make life better in our cities and towns.”
Smithfield Mayor Darrell Simmons said the information officials get at the convention helps them understand what their city should be able to provide for its citizens.
“There are three things a town should be doing for its citizens,” said Simmons. “One major one is the public works services, the other two are community events and test scores for children.”
UCLT conventions are held twice a year in Salt Lake City, and draw representatives from 245 cities and townships throughout the state. For more information on what the organization does, visit its website at http://www.ulct.org
