MENDON—A brand new house in Mendon was a total loss after being engulfed in flames Sunday night.

The fire was called in at about 9 p.m. The owners had not yet moved into the home on Cobblestone Road—about 2055 S. 5900 West—on the bench on the southern edge of Mendon, and no injuries were reported, said a Cache County police officer.

A neighbor living near the large, vacant home, Ana Lockhart, said, “It is a brand new house that is about 90 percent finished, but nobody has moved in yet. It is a Doctor Larsen moving in, but we don’t know who he is or if he has a family.”

The Logan Herald-Journal report, by Charles Geraci.

Brent Linford of Mendon Fire Rescue said he estimated at least 20 vehicles responded and that the home is a total loss. Linford worked below the home, watching for brush fire since the home is located at the base of the Wellsville Mountains.

“At this point, we are just trying to get the fire contained. We have a good handle on it as long as the water doesn’t run out,” Linford said. The cause of the blaze, which could be seen for miles from across the Cache Valley, was unknown, he said.

Troy Bindrup owns a property lot just above the burned home. “No one has ever built up there,” he said. “It is weird—why would it start on fire like this? It is a really nice house. I think they were just getting ready to move in.”
