An appointed teacher from each school will now lead Logan School District’s After School Club.

In previous years, Logan Parks and Recreation appointed an independent aid to run the program at each school. For convenience and to better help children involved in the 2014-2015 school year, the program has changed its rules.

Kathy Sherman, the site director of the After School Club at Ellis Elementary, said she sees many benefits to having a teacher from the school run the program.

“I think there is a better connection between the school day to the After School Club when it’s a teacher,” Sherman said.

Sherman meets with each teacher once a month to discuss the core curriculum for each grade level, as well as pinpoint struggling students who may benefit from the After School Club.

According to Sherman, the club’s main focus is to help students who may be struggling to get homework done, or who live in households where parents speak English as a second language and are unable to help with homework.

“This program is huge,” Sherman said. “Especially for all the kids that would go home and wouldn’t get any help on their homework.”

Anyone is eligible to sign their child up for the club, but the majority of parents who take interest are those who work, speak English as a second language or are having trouble getting their child to do their homework.

Emily Boyter, a club aid, said she already sees the children improving after getting individual help from a teacher from their school.

“When the kids have extra help from a teacher that they recognize from the school day, it seems to be better for them,” Boyter said. “They’re getting the help they need from someone that they always know where to find throughout the school day, and I think that’s a really big deal.”
