LOGAN–A Utah State University student was sentenced to two days in jail and required to pay a fine of $1,153 in Logan City Justice Court on Tuesday.

Washington native Ian Lonis Coates, 18, pleaded guilty to charges of possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and tobacco, accumulating two Class B and one class A misdemeanors. Coates waived his legal right to counsel and requested the court to proceed to sentencing immediately.

Judge David C. Marx warned Coates that, if he is caught again, possession of marijuana can escalate to a Class A misdemeanor from Class B.

Coates, who said he had been smoking marijuana “for a while” but is “not addicted,” was put on probation for 12 months during which he is to complete court-approved rehabilitation and smoking programs.

Coates must also “submit to search of person, premises, or property and seizure of any evidence without a search warrant, any time of day or night, upon reasonable suspicions,” according to court documents.

Judge Marx’s decision was based on Coates’ criminal history which showed no prior violations of the law. Coates was arrested by city law enforcement officers in Rich Hall, USU student housing, on Nov. 17.
