Utah State University’s Sustainability Council will be recognizing students, faculty, employees and community members for their efforts in creating a more sustainable community at a symposium to be held in April.

The four categories up for nomination include the student sustainability leadership award, the sustainability educator award, the employee advocacy award and the innovation award.

Any student, faculty member or employee at USU can be nominated. Community members and groups are also qualified for recognition, depending on the specific category in which they are nominated.

“The state of our environment and economy affects us all,” said Alexi Lamm, the sustainability coordinator at USU. “This symposium gives us a chance to celebrate the accomplishments that have been made toward fostering a better community.”

According to Lamm, a small quorum of the Sustainability Council will oversee who is chosen for each award.

In addition to Lamm, the committee includes Kate Stephens, the coordinator for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning, as well as selected council members and interns.

“Everyone likes recognition,” said Darren Bingham, a student intern for the Sustainability Council. “Sustainability is at a tipping point and if we don’t celebrate it, people won’t know about it.”

Only three nominations have been made since the application was released on March 6. The council hopes people will take the time to nominate those who deserve to be nominated, Lamm said.

All nominations for the Sustainability Symposium are due March 31 and can be submitted on USU’s Blue Goes Green website

The awards will be announced on April 15 at 11:30 a.m. in the Center and West Colony Room of the Taggart Student Center. Registration for the symposium is open to the public and is due April 8.
