Weber County man pleads guilty to stealing from USU dorm

LOGAN – A Weber County resident accused of stealing from a Utah State University dormitory room pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft Dec. 5 in 1st District Court.

Mitchell Schoonmaker, 20, a Farr West resident, entered a USU dorm on Sept. 21 with the intent commit theft. According to the prosecution, he entered a dorm room unsolicited and took a few minor items as well as a small amount of cash. As he was leaving the dorm, Schoonmaker also took an unlocked bike. The prosecution said he took the bike in order to escape from law enforcement officers. In court, Schoonmaker said he took only the bike to find his Suburban.

Initially, Schoonmaker was charged with one count of burglary, a second-degree felony, and two counts of theft, Class A and Class B misdemeanors. The Class B misdemeanor charge was dropped by Judge Kevin Allen. Schoonmaker pleaded guilty to all charges.

Schoonmaker’s sentencing date was set for Jan. 23.
