WELLSVILLE–Two Wellsville residents were transported to Logan Regional Hospital after their house went up in flames around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Homeowner Tom Leishman and one other were transported in an unknown condition after their home at 750 E. 400 North became engulfed in flames, Mendon Fire Chief Ray Olson said. He said five or six people were in the home at the time of the fire and were all safely evacuated by family and friends.

At least 15 emergency response vehicles were at the scene, including the Wellsville, Logan and Mendon fire departments. Firefighters cut large ventilation holes in the roof to allow smoke to escape, Will Lusk of the Logan Fire Department said.

Olson said the cause of the fire is still unknown. Witness and neighbor Kalen Maughan said he thought the cause was a propane tank that blew up.

“I know Tom had a hard time breathing from all the smoke,” Maughan said.

The structural damage, Olson said, will be very expensive and it is unknown if the home was insured.

“Basically the back porch to the house is gone, and the roof is off. It may be cheaper to knock it over and start over,” Olson said.

Olson said the fire was under control as of 9:45 p.m. and they were doing mop-up, finding hot spots to prevent rekindling.
