PROVIDENCE–Zeppe’s, an Italian water ice shop, had its grand opening in Providence last night. Manager Mike Andrade said it was about time to get into the scene.

After spending over a year and a half looking all over the valley, Andrade said he found the perfect location in Providence off of 100 North St.

“It’s by Stadium 8, a pretty popular movie theater, Little Caesar’s and Macey’s, a family grocery store,” Andrade said. “People can come here from all over the valley.”

He said it was a good idea because it’s different from the normal ice cream place.

“There’s no other product like it in the valley.” Andrade said. Even in the off-season of ice cream cones and milkshakes, he said, “Why not do it now.”

The radio station 94.5 VFX covered the opening, offering free movie tickets to encourage people to “get down here and check it out.“

The store was crowded with high school and college students. Ashlyn Smith, a student at Utah State University, said she and her friends heard about it on the radio and decided to come try it.

“It’s something unique, it’ll do really well,” she said.

Carissa Frandsen, a Logan local who had the black cherry Italian water ice said she would certainly come back to Zeppe’s.

“It’s so much better than ice cream, which is sad because I really like ice cream,” Frandsen said.

Her sister-in-law, Sarah Frandsen, who got the green apple flavor, said, “We got in, were served. It was great, we didn’t have to wait in line for an hour.”

Casper’s Malt Shoppe is located just around the corner from Zeppe’s but the customers already feel optimistic about the shop’s future. Sarah said, “It’ll definitely give Casper’s a little competition, especially in the summer.”

They are open on Sundays, which is a big deal, Andrade said, because not many other competitors are open.

“We thought people can come in after they get out of church, that’s why we open at 2,” he said. “People can stop by with the family.”
